South Africa uses South African Standard Time, UTC+2, throughout the year. That creates near-complete working-day overlap with the UK and a useful morning-to-afternoon window with US teams. The best schedule depends on whether the role needs live collaboration or focused asynchronous delivery.

Working with a UK team

South Africa is usually one or two hours ahead of the UK, depending on British daylight-saving time. A conventional South African working day therefore overlaps most or all of the UK day, making live meetings, customer support and collaborative work straightforward.

Working with a US team

Overlap is smaller but still useful. South African afternoons meet US mornings, particularly for Eastern Time. Teams commonly place stand-ups, reviews and decisions in that window, then rely on written updates outside it.

Design the day around the work

  • Set two to four core overlap hours when the role requires live collaboration
  • Protect blocks for focused work outside meetings
  • Write down decisions and handovers
  • Use response-time agreements instead of expecting constant availability
  • Review the schedule when daylight-saving changes occur abroad

Roles that benefit from live overlap

Account management, executive assistance, customer support, project management and collaborative development usually need scheduled overlap. Design, content, analysis and back-office operations can often use a more asynchronous rhythm.

Make timezone differences an advantage

A well-planned handover can create a productive relay. A US team leaves a clear brief; a South African professional progresses the work; the result is ready when the US day begins. This only works when tasks, ownership and acceptance criteria are explicit.
